Griffin_arrives-bbcAppearance of Nick Griffin, the leader of the far-right British National Party (BNP) on the BBC Program, Question Time1, has caused a furore and raised questions on the limitations of freedom of speech. Should an individual be permitted to express views that cause offence to a certain section of society? Even if the views are technically permitted by law, should the mass media encourage this by giving racist bigots like Nick Griffin a platform on a primetime TV? A more fundamental point in this debate is - should freedom of speech have a limit in the first place.

Storms over China

‘In Xinjiang, Uighurs and other Muslim groups struggle against Sinification’. A line from page 255 of TheClash of Civilisations. That controversial Zeitgeist book, mentioned only in ritual refutations and shrill anathemas. But Professor Huntington was right. The brave people of East Turkestan are indeed rising in revolt against forced assimilation by the Chinese. The Uighurs, a people whose name Westerners do not even know how to pronounce correctly, fight on to defend their culture and religion. Like little David taking on Goliath the giant, the battle seems pathetically unequal. Perhaps 15 million Uighurs versus 1.300 million others, mostly Chinese. But here the priest thinks of Hegel’s phrase, the cunning of Reason. It means events that occur at crucial times in human history. Causing tremendous upheavals that nevertheless result in the triumph of freedom. Who knows whether the neglected, defenceless Uighurs be not one of them? Are they perhaps the spanner in the works? The joker in the pack? The tiny, insignificant speck of grit that will grow and grow and eventually cause the Chinese tyranny to break up and disintegrate? Only God, the mysterious, Supreme Reason, knows...

The message of Islam is that pursuit of money for its own sake is unnatural, inhumane, and will lead us to catastrophe

O you who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers. (Quran 63:9)

This verse in the Qur'an is an invitation for humanity to make a relatively small effort in this world, in return for the eternal reward of the hereafter. It is a call to save ourselves from becoming fixated on our wealth and on providing our children with the latest gadget and games, which ultimately are mere distractions from our remembrance of the creator.

But humans are short-termist; we think primarily of our pleasures now rather than the harmony and serenity of the world to come. Chapter 102 of the Qur'an says that we are distracted by competing in worldly increase, until we finally end up in our graves where we will be questioned about our excesses.

In a graphic illustration of the new world order, Arab states have launched secret moves with China, Russia and France to stop using the US currency for oil trading

Iran announced late last month that its foreign currency reserves would henceforth be held in euros rather than dollars.

In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.

Lisbon Treaty established on 13th of December 2007, is another step towards cementing European unity. Almost all the member states of the European Union have ratified the treaty through the parliamentary process. Ireland is the only country to have done this through a referendum. Once the treaty comes into effect, Europe will have its first President, unfortunately the nasty war criminal, Tony Blair, looks set to occupy that position.

"We think that this gives us a sense of momentum when the United States has accolades tossed its way rather than shoes"

- U.S. State Department spokesperson, P.J. Crowley

Obama made history as the first black President of USA, and once again, he makes history as the first person awarded the Noble Peace Prize for hopes and promises, rather than actual accomplishments. He is the fourth US President to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, after Theodore Roosevelt (1908), Woodrow Wilson (1919), and Jimmy Carter (2002). Another prominent Noble Peace Prize laureate from the ranks of US leadership was the controversial Henry Kissinger, the former Secretary of State in the Nixon administration, he is considered by many as a war criminal, let alone deserving of such an accolade.  But it might explain why Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were also nominated for this award.

“The US can't promote democracy but then reject the results of this democracy.”

Amr Moussa, Arab League Secretary General

palestineJimmy Carter, the former US president, leading a team of 900 foreign observes said, the elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were "completely honest". Definitely honest, compared to the standards set by the US, when George Bush ‘won’ the Florida 2000 election by denying the Afro-Americans and all the other coloured folks a vote, as they were poised to vote for the democrats. It must have brought pleasant memories back of the good old days, when the likes of Bush could literally chain and lynch those black folks; never mind vote, they would be lucky, if they could breath.
